It's National Pit Bull Awareness Month.
It's National Adopt a Shelter Dog Month.
It's National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
It's Vegetarian Month.
It's a whole long list of this or that month. You can check one list out here.
I would like to focus on two things: Pit Bulls and shelter dogs. Go figure, huh?
First, many areas are organizing walks for October 27th, which is National Pit Bull Awareness Day. Here in Colorado, Kelly from WIshcuit and her adorable Pit Bull, Zoey, are organizing a walk in LIttleton that over 200 people have RSVP'd to! We were able to attend the walk last year and it was loads of fun. We basically paraded our Pits, and any other dog who joined us because all dogs are welcome, through downtown Littleton. We hung out and chatted with some vendors who were there and took part in some fun contests, like Best Wiggle Butt!
This year, part of the event is Pit Bulls With a Purpose. The purpose is to raise funds for the Colorado State University Animal Cancer Center whose research and advanced treatments are making a huge impact on how cancer affects pets. I hope I can help spread the word about the chip in and get some momentum behind the mission.
Second, shelter dogs and pets. All pets hold a special place in my heart, but this is a month to focus on all the pets who are spending their time in shelters, waiting for their forever home. I find it even hard to write about because the thought of all those sad eyes staring through kennels and cages pulls at my heartstrings in ways that make me consider remodeling my home to make it a sanctuary. And I continue to tell myself that someday I will have the means to have my own sanctuary and foster program for pets...someday...
Please use this month to talk about shelter pets to your friends and family and everyone who may be considering adding a pet to the family. And please network pets in your local shelters. Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, YouTube - whatever your fancy, let's share, share, share and get some pets adopted!!!
