I think Twiggy is feeling a little left out lately. I've been so focused on Dre and the Anti-BSL campaign that Twiggy hasn't received much focus. Today I would like to focus on Greyhounds.
Greyhounds are counting on us to fight the battle to put an end to the racing life that the majority of them are raised in. I can't say that I've ever met a person who races a Greyhound, but I can say I've never heard stories about how well Greyhounds who endure a track life are treated. Nope. I hear about the stats of Greyhounds that get injured and are discarded, about Greyhounds literally disappearing with no trace, about being made to live in a kennel without much human interaction (meaning love and comfort) and other horrific stories about Greyhounds and their plight to exit the racing world.
Organizations like Grey2K USA have succeeded in bringing much light to Greyhounds and the conditions they are forced to endure at tracks. They have led the march to shut down dog racing in several states and they are still fighting to get it shut down everywhere. Colorado shut down its racing back in 2008 and an interesting thing happened. We ran out of Greyhounds to adopt out. Don't get me wrong, this a good problem to have. It allowed Non-profits like Colorado Greyhound Adoption to bring in Greyhounds from other states and get them adopted here.
Every once in a while I like to share a photo of Twiggy as a puppy. Greyhound puppies are so rare to see. I had not seen one before Twiggy, and everywhere we went people couldn't believe their eyes - even our Vet! Happy Monday!
Why adopt a Greyhound? Well, Twiggys asks, "why not?" - with a puffed up chest!
Greyhounds are wonderful pets. As fast as they are, most of them are actually pretty lazy. I've heard them referred to as the "fastest couch potato." That's definitely Twiggy. She spends most of her day napping and sunbathing and we usually have two spurts of energy expulsion each day. Whether that is made of walks or zoomies in the backyard - or both! - just depends on the day. I love when Twiggy "loses her mind" - that's what we call it when she zooms all over the place. She's so happy and cute when she's spazzing out. And Onyx has gotten so used to be run over that he now hides under the deck and shoots out once in a while to egg her on. Then, once she is done, he takes his turn to zoom around. A stubby little Pit mix doesn't quite have the elegance of a sleek, Greyhound, but he's adorable none the less.
This is my first introduction to Greyhound Groupie. I came up with this the other night and really like the ring it has, so I created a Facebook page and a Twitter account. I was slightly annoyed that the character limit for Twitter was one short to spell out "groupie", so we are @GreyhoundGrupie. Oh well. I really don't have any activity for either...yet.
My thought behind Greyhound Groupie is that Twiggy is a Diva and expects to have an entourage, and Onyx is a follower - he'll go whereever she leads him - he is her Groupie. They both represent things I am passionate about in the pet community: Greyhounds and Pit Bulls. I hope to utilize the accounts to share the latest news and happenings regarding Greyhound racing - specifically ending it and spreading the word on adoptable Greyhounds - and educating about BSL (Breed Specific Legislation) and how ridiculous it is.
That doesn't mean that is all we'll share. The pet community is filled with important causes, cute information and necessary information. We will be sharing all of it, but Greyhound and Pit Bull issues hit pretty close to home around here. Expect a lot of sharing on those issues. We hope you'll join us!
